Zenoss Core Network and System Monitoring Review

I’ve had the unique opportunity to preview a new book on Zenoss. The book, Zenoss Core Network and System Monitoring (Packt Publishing), touches on the essentials of Zenoss administration and use. The target audience of this guide is anyone looking to setup and successfully monitor their network and systems. I stress the word success. It’s not the most difficult thing to setup Zenoss and have it “work”. What this book will help you do is setup Zenoss so that it works for your business.

After sequentially running through each chapter, you will be able to install, configure, manage and successfully monitor all your devices. You’ll feel comfortable with all the essentials: alerting, user/group management, data collection, service monitoring, event transforms and much more.

The book is thoughtfully laid out and the information is presented well. There are many real world examples and helpful screen shots to guide you to a successful implementation. It’s possible to achieve the same end result using the online documentation from Zenoss, but you’ll waste hours scouring the forums and guides to get the specifics that this book clearly presents. I would have jumped all over a book like this, had it been available, when I started implementing Zenoss at my company. It would have saved me a ton of time and steered me clear from a lot of painful mistakes.

This is not only a powerful guide for beginners, but it is a great reference for savvy Zenoss admins as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to successfully implement Zenoss or broaden their knowledge of the product.
